I would like to vote for Fiona Oakes, Tower Hill Stables Animal Sanctuary.

She is truly amazing, she rescues animals that may have been overlooked, abandoned, neglated or put to sleep and gives them a 2nd chance, but in most cases their last chance at life. She currently cares for 400 rescue animals at their sanctuary in Essex, with no staff, her partner is able to help at weekends but during the week she works purely on her own caring for all the animals. She has rescued 36 dogs, which all live in their house not kennels, alot of these dogs were in council pounds on the verge of being destoyed, but luckily for them Fiona was kind enough to offer them a loving home just in time. She also cares for 50 pigs, which have either been destined for meat or to be shot, whom are now living their lives fully and happy. There are also 34 horses and ponies which live at the sanctuary, many were abandoned and neglected, thanks to Fiona are all living the life that every horse should have. There are also many cows that were saved from death at the sanctuary by Fiona. She also currently cares for 25 sheep, 50 cats (some wild some tame), goats, a large number of ex-battery hens, and a number of small animals such as rabbits and Degus. She also rans marathons in aid of the sanctuary and is a part time firefighter and is a vegan.

Animal Rights AND Vegan categories (the two are mutually dependant):

I, too, would like to nominate Fiona Oakes at Tower Hill Stables Animal Sanctuary in Essex.
Fiona works tirelessly from the early hours until late at night to give the beings at the sanctuary the closest thing to freedom possible at this time, in this human dominated world.

1. "Animal Rights": Fiona Oakes at Tower Hill Stables Animal Sanctuary in Essex.

Fiona works tirelessly to look after over 400 animals and to search for homes for dogs that are in danger of being put to sleep because they have not found a home.
Fiona often has huge vet bills but does it all for the love of the animals.
Any profit that is made goes straight back into caring for the animals.
I have not heard of a more hard-working or deserving person.

The animals come from a variety of sources, mostly are facing the needle when space is found for them at the sanctuary to live out their remaining years with food, warmth, love and when the time comes dignity in death.

Fiona not only does this (the work of about 5 men - 5 Big men) she runs about 80 miles a week and is one of the UK's best female marathon runners. When competing to promote Veganism

I would like to nominate Fiona Oakes as well, because she is an incredible role model not only for veganism but also for compassion and humanity. She runs an animal sanctuary caring for 400 animals but she is also a world class marathon runner promoting a cruelty free lifestyle by coming in the top places in the biggest marathons in the world. She even wins them, creating a stir by winning a County title and breaking the course record by 11 minutes. Every aspect of her life is devoted to helping animals. She even helped start a vegan AR group in Russia where she has a small sanctuary too!

I would also like to nominate Robin Lane (for either category) who has campaigned tirelessly for veganism & Animal Rights since the early 80's. In particular, one of his greatest achievements was to organise the first ever vegan festival in London 12 years ago, & this has been held annually since, growing bigger each time & being an eagerly awaited event in the Animal Rights calendar.. It has been seen as a model of excellence in the vegan world, & now such festivals are held around the country & abroad.Well done Robin for this inspiration, & for the hard work I know it has entailed through most of each year preparing for this brilliant event!

i bring to your attention the work of Jane Shepherd of The Algernon Trust who works ceaselessly for animals and is a vegan herself. Jane started the sanctuary about 20 years ago and works 24 hours a day, including driving hundreds of miles to rescue dogs. Apart from donations and memberships Jane has to fund raise to pay for the animals in her care; it is a never ending treadmill for her; but she is passionate about the care of animals. At present has foxes, ferrets, cats, dogs, various varieties of chickens, geese, etc.Jane has a no kill policy and will never have a healthy animal put down; most of the cats she keeps are too old or too ill to be rehomed. I heartily recommend Jane for the Award. The sanctuary is The Algernon Trust (named after the first fox saved), Whittlebury, Northants.

Animal Rights: Fiona Oakes, Tower Hill Animal Sanctuary, Essex.

Fiona is an inspiration to all animal rights and welfare activists/sympathisers. Fiona looks after more than 400 animals at her sanctuary, for which she receives no funding and from which she gets no wage. Every day she takes in more animals despite the huge burden she already carries aqnd every year she runs marathons to raise money and awareness for her animals. If she won I know exactly where the money would end up going!
